Mado Apartment is a study in marrying Japanese spatial sensibilities with contemporary family life within an apartment home. Centred on the concept of visual permeability — “mado,” meaning “window” — it utilises carefully calibrated openings to shape relationships between public, play, and private areas. The material palette is restrained, with subtle touches of natural stone textures and patterns, grounding the project in a quiet dialogue between minimalism and nature.

The project begins with a rethinking of spatial flow and visual connection within the home. Instead of relying on enclosed rooms, the design introduces carefully placed openings and framed thresholds to preserve openness while allowing moments of privacy. At the centre of the layout is a custom-built carpentry feature that integrates storage, concealed media, and a framed view into the children’s play area, encouraging interaction while maintaining visual calm. Shoji-inspired timber screens provide flexible layers between the playroom, dining area, and study nook.

Existing light pink marble floors are paired with white oak joinery in the private domains to create a harmonious environment for the family, while a dramatic Rossa Luna marble kitchen island introduces a touch of artistic flair. The master suite incorporates a walk-in wardrobe and study corner, and the bathroom references a contemporary onsen through darker stone and timber finishes, enhancing comfort and adaptability.
